SAM-e is made naturally in the liver and brain of cats. In the liver, it plays a key part in normal liver function, including the processing of waste. In the brain, it supports normal dopamine function and healthy cognitive function, and it works as an antioxidant.
SAM-e also supports joint health, so cats on maxxiSAMe get some extra joint support for everyday comfort. If your cat has joint problems, they may still benefit from a dedicated joint supplement as well.
Our SAM-e formulation is specifically designed to protect the vulnerable SAM-e nutrient from decreasing in potency.
Our fiber base protects against the acidity levels in a cat’s stomach and allows for quick absorption into the intestinal tract.
Our base also contains defatted flax, sunflower, and sesame seed fiber with naturally occurring immune and hormone-boosting functions.
In addition to the intestinal support provided by the fiber, there are also the antioxidants provided by lignans, a group of chemical compounds found in plants that support immune systems and may help regulate hormone levels.
We carefully formulated maxxiSAMe to provide serious support for ill or aging pets.
There are predictable deficiencies in nutrients that can further impact the overall health of the cat. Not only do our supporting ingredients in maxxiSAMe target liver health and cognitive function, but they also work throughout the body to prime it for the efficient processing of SAM-e.
maxxiSAMe has no artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or binders.
To learn more about these hardworking supporting ingredients, including artichoke, B vitamins and lignans, and how they help your cat, go to the ingredients section below.
Learning that the health of the cat you love is failing is difficult. Liver problems can take a noticeable toll on your pet’s overall health and behaviour. If your cat has a liver condition, maxxiSAMe can be part of the care plan developed with your vet.
S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e), one of the active ingredients in maxxiSAMe, supports normal liver function and helps to protect liver cells.
As pets age, they too can be affected by changes in the brain. Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) is the result of age-related changes in the brain and can show as confusion, memory loss and other signs of reduced mental function. If you notice these signs, talk to your vet: early diagnosis and the right care can make a real difference to your cat’s quality of life.
Working as an antioxidant, SAM-e supports normal dopamine function and normal brain function in older pets.
Our maxxiSAMe powder is designed to be mixed right into your cat’s food as part of their regular meals.
Other formulations of SAM-e for cats may require a pill or chewable to be given one full hour before a meal on an empty stomach. No cat, or cat owner, enjoys that.
And our patented base, containing additional vitamins and antioxidants, decreases the need for additional supplements related to your cat’s cognitive or liver health issues.
With maxxiSAMe, just sprinkle the daily dosage over two meals a day, allowing for the maximum absorption of all ingredients.
Our powder formulation allows you to give the exact amount needed, making it easy to increase or decrease at the recommendation of your veterinarian.
Coated tablets containing SAM-e are sensitive to moisture and heat, and therefore cannot be split or crumbled without losing their efficacy.
As cats grow older, they can face many of the same age-related health conditions as humans. Our unique stabilized SAM-e powder boosts liver and cognitive functions while easing joint discomfort and improving mood at the same time.
While maxxiSAMe is hard at work within your beloved cat’s liver and brain, expect marked improvements in attitude, energy, and behavior of your cat.
SAM-e is a compound made naturally in the body that plays an important role in normal bodily function. Its full name is S-adenosylmethionine, but it is usually called SAM-e or SAMe. It is formed from the essential amino acid methionine and is found in every living cell.
SAM-e is one of the body’s most important antioxidants. Antioxidants help to protect cells from damage. There are no food sources of SAM-e, but it can be given as a supplement. SAM-e has been used as a dietary supplement for people since the 1990s, and in recent years it has become popular for pets too, mainly to support the liver.
maxxiSAMe is formulated by maxxipaws to support two things that matter as our pets age: liver health and brain (cognitive) health.
How is best to give maxxiSAMe?
One of the great benefits of maxxiSAMe is that it can be given with food (unlike coated tablets, which must be given on an empty stomach). So the easiest way is to mix it into your cat’s food. For the best absorption, divide the daily amount between two meals. maxxiSAMe has no artificial flavours, colours, preservatives or binders. The taste is mild (a little sweet) to us, and the vast majority of pets happily eat their food with maxxiSAMe added. If you have any problems, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
Quality ingredients and manufacturing
We never compromise on quality. maxxiSAMe is made in the USA in a GMP and NASC (National Animal Supplement Council) certified facility, using pharmaceutical human grade ingredients, and every batch is tested against its specification.
SAM-e is not only good for the liver and brain. Studies in people have also looked at SAM-e’s role in joint health (Arthritis Foundation).
maxxiSAMe does not replace a dedicated joint supplement like maxxiflex+ for pets with joint problems, but it gives valuable extra joint support to pets taking SAM-e.
SAM-e powder formula has many benefits over coated SAM-e tablets:
Easier Administration
Most dog owners have been there, trying to get their pet to eat coated tablets. Most dogs hate them so you either have to hide the tablet in a treat (and hope your clever pet will not manage to outsmart you and just eat the treat) or manually force it down your dogs throats, which let’s face it, no dog owner enjoys doing and definitely not on a daily basis.
Coated tablets must be given on empty stomach because of the high acidity level in our dogs’ stomach. This is to shield the tablet so it can make it to the intestine to be absorbed. As we have explained, the stabilized powder used in maxxiSAMe protects the SAM-e in the stomach and ensures it makes it to the intestine where it is absorbed.
With powder, you can simple mix it in with your dog’s food. This is because maxxiSAMe, unlike coated tablets, can be given with food.
Quicker Absorption
The fiber base used in maxxiSAMe powder makes absorption quicker and maximizes the availability of all of the ingredients in the intestinal tract.
What’s more, including B vitamins in the formula increases the effectiveness of maxxiSAMe as it helps with the absorption of the SAM-e.
Maximized Results
It is recommended to divide the daily SAM-e dosage between two servings for maximum results, i.e. to maximize the absorption of all ingredients. This is another thing you cannot do with coated SAM-e tablets.
Coated tablets are sensitive to moisture and extreme heat and can therefore not be split or crumbled.
Accurate Dosage
Powder allows the pet owner to administer the exact dosage for pet of any size. maxxiSAMe is one product that fits dogs of all sizes, as well as cats.
This also makes it easier to increase or decrease the dosage if needed at the recommendation of your veterinarian.
To develop effective premium quality SAM-e formula suitable for both dogs and cats
To effectively support canine and feline liver health and cognitive function
To make SAM-e formula for pets that is easy to administer
To make SAM-e formula that is suitable for pets of any size, i.e. one size fits all
We are proud to say that we achieved all our goals with maxxiSAMe advanced SAM-e formula for pets.
In its native form, SAM-e is labile (easily broken down) and degrades rapidly. SAM-e therefore has to be formulated in a way that protects it from the enzymes in the stomach.
The stomach acid in dogs and cats is lower than in humans but lower pH means higher acidity. Normal human pH is 1.5 – 3.5 on an empty stomach, pH 5 when it is full. While the pH in dogs and cats is between 1 and 2, or significantly more acid.
The SAM-e used in maxxiSAMe is patented stabilized powdered form of SAM-e. This protects the SAM-e from interaction with environmental factors, as well as from the other ingredients used in the formulation and guarantees the availability of the active substance (SAM-e) when taken orally.
What’s more, this protects the SAM-e in the stomach and ensures it makes it to the intestine where it is absorbed.
maxxiSAMe does not only contain SAM-e. It also contains other ingredients (see details below) chosen because they support healthy liver and brain function in ageing pets. It includes the B vitamins that support normal liver function, so you do not have to buy or give them separately. B vitamins also support the body’s absorption of SAM-e.
The liver produces SAM-e from the amino acid methionine. It is converted into glutathione which plays an important role in protecting the liver cells (hepatocytes) from damage from the waste products that the liver removes from the blood stream.
When the liver is damaged, then less SAM-e, and thus less glutathione, is produced. This means even more liver cells become damaged, i.e. vicious cycle has started.
SAM-e has been shown to increase the glutathione levels in dogs and cats.
SAM-e supports normal brain function in older pets.
It supports normal dopamine function in the brain and works as an antioxidant, helping to protect brain cells.
maxxiSAMe contains Cynara Scolymus, a.k.a. artichoke. It is a member of the milk thistle family and better known under its common name Globe Artichoke.
The artichoke’s main plant contains a long list of constituents, including cynarin (the main constituent), silymarin and caffeic acid that have all been shown to be effective for liver health.
maxxiSAMe contains artichoke leaf extract 4:1 concentrate (which means that 4 kgs of starting material will result in 1 kg of extracted material when the starting material is extracted with a solvent).
This is concentrated plant material, not standardized extract. Meaning it contains a whole host of constituents, not just one.
So while Globe Artichoke contains silymarin it is just one of the constituent. Other ingredients, especially cynarin and caffeic acid are as important as silymarin for liver health.
Artichoke works in a similar way to milk thistle (silymarin). Like milk thistle, artichoke has long been used to support the liver: it helps to protect liver cells and supports their normal renewal (Rain-Tree).
Artichoke extract has strong antioxidant properties that help to protect liver cells. It also supports normal fat and cholesterol levels in the liver.
Artichoke supports the production and flow of bile from the liver. Both are important for a healthy liver and for the normal digestion of food.
Choline is an essential micronutrient. It is vital for healthy liver function and normal brain development.
This is why maxxiSAMe contains choline bitartrate (40% choline cation).
Choline is needed to move fat out of the liver, so it plays an important part in normal liver function. It also supports healthy muscles.
Choline is also a building block of acetylcholine, a messenger in the brain, so it supports normal brain function and memory. This is especially important as pets get older.
Animal studies have shown that choline is essential for normal brain development and supports cognitive function in later life (Oregon State University).
Inositol (sometimes called Vitamin B8) is one of the B complex vitamins (though not officially recognized as vitamin as it can be synthesized in the body from glucose).
Inositol is present in all body tissue but with the highest concentration in the brain, heart and eye lens.
Inositol is involved in the production and action of neurotransmitters, the chemicals that carry messages between nerve cells. It supports calm, balanced behaviour, which is why it is also one of the key ingredients in our maxxicalm calming aid.
Older pets can sometimes become unsettled or anxious as they age, and inositol supports a calm state of mind.
Choline and inositol also work together: both help to move fat out of the liver, supporting normal fat metabolism and healthy liver function.
maxxiSAMe contains a range of B vitamins. All B vitamins are essential for the liver to carry out its many metabolic functions, and they also support the absorption of SAM-e. maxxiSAMe contains the B vitamins your cat needs, so you do not have to buy or give them separately.
B vitamins help the body turn food into energy and use fats and protein. They are also needed for healthy skin, coat, eyes and liver, and for a healthy nervous system.
Vitamin B5 (5 mg)
Vitamin B5 (D-Pantothenic Acid) is critical for the manufacturing of red blood cells.
It is also important in maintaining a healthy digestive tract and helps the body use other vitamins (not least Riboflavin).
Vitamin B1 (4 mg)
As well as supporting liver health and brain function, Thiamine (vitamin B1) may strengthen the immune system and improve the body’s ability to withstand stressful conditions (being disorientated and confused is without a doubt very stressful for our cats).
Vitamin B2 (4 mg)
Riboflavin (vitamin B2) works as an antioxidant by fighting damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. B2 is also needed to help the body change vitamin B6 into form it can use and is important for body growth and red blood cell production.
Vitamin B6 (4 mg)
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride) helps the body to make several neurotransmitters, i.e. chemicals that carry signals from one nerve cell to another. It is therefore needed for normal brain development and function, and helps the body to make the hormones serotonin and norepinephrine, which influence mood, and melatonin, which helps regulate the body clock.
The body also needs Vitamin B6 in order to absorb vitamin B12 and to make red blood cells and cells of the immune system.
Vitamin B12 (5 mcg)
Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells, and it helps in the production of DNA and RNA, the body’s genetic material.
What’s more, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B9 (folic acid) work together to produce S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e), a compound involved in immune function and mood.
What is in The Powder Base?
The base in maxxiSAMe is not just a filling, it has its own health benefits for cats. The base is therefore one of the ingredients in maxxiSAMe.
The base contains defatted flax, sunflower, and sesame seed fibre. This is a concentrated form of fiber supplying nearly double the lignan content from what is in whole flaxmeal.
Fiber for cats
Fibre is important to cleanse the intestinal tract. It scrubs away debris and creates environment that allows the good bacteria to flourish (as fibre is the only food source for good bacteria, i.e. prebiotics). Without the flourishing good bacteria, the immune system and nutrient absorption suffers.
This means that maxxiSAMe can work faster than products that contain only actives. Actives that go into a sluggish inflamed intestinal tract can simply pass on by without being utilized.
Lignans are natural plant compounds that are high in antioxidants and fibre. Being high in antioxidants, they support the immune system.
Lignans also support normal hormone balance, which is useful for both male and female cats, including those that have been spayed or neutered.
We always recommend starting slowly with any new supplement and gradually increasing the amount given. This allows your cat to get used to the new ingredients, both the taste and texture, and helps to minimise the risk of any potential stomach upset.
The recommended maintenance amount is shown on the back of the label. Your vet may advise a different amount for your cat, for example double the maintenance amount for the first few weeks.
This is one of the many benefits of a powder: it is easy to adjust the amount in line with your cat’s needs over time. One scoop (included) is 2.5 grams and equals 1 teaspoon (baking measure teaspoon).
It is recommended dividing the daily dosage between two servings as this maximizes the absorption of all the ingredients.
If you only feed your cat once a day, then you may want to introduce daily treat time with maxxiSAMe for the second serving, e.g. by making pate ball filled with maxxiSAMe.
Yes you can give maxxiSAMe with food.
This is because the SAM-e used in maxxiSAMe for cats is a patented stabilized powdered form of SAM-e. This protects the SAM-e from interaction with environmental factors, as well as from the other ingredients used in the formulation.
This also protects the SAM-e in the stomach and ensures it makes it to the intestine where it is absorbed, i.e. it guarantees the availability of the active substance (SAM-e) when taken orally.
This is also why maxxiSAMe can be taken with food, unlike coated SAM-e pills which must be taken on an empty stomach an hour before or after mealtimes.
As maxxiSAMe is powder you need to administer the dosage amount yourself and you may be concerned about getting the dosage exactly right. Especially those with small cats as some may find it tricky to measure smaller amounts.
You don’t need to be overly concerned about this. SAM-e is a natural ingredient that is safe in higher dosages than we recommend. If you give your cat maxxiSAMe twice a day as recommended, then a little bit more or less per serving will ensure you meet the daily requirements over time.
The easiest way to administer maxxiSAMe is to mix it in with your cat’s food. maxxiSAMe has a natural flavour as it does not contain any artificial flavours, colours, preservatives, or binders. The vast majority of cats happily eat their food when maxxiSAMe has been added to it.
Others may prefer daily SAM-e treat. There are a number of ways of doing this. By adding a small amount of water, you can make a “paste”. Some cats happily accept it just like that. For others it works better to mix it with something the cat enjoys, like peanut butter, pate or a small piece of chicken or ham. Or you can make a small “ball” (like dry kibble) and put it in his food bowl and put some liquid omega oil on top (as most cats love the taste of fatty acids).
If your cat is not accepting maxxiSAMe for some reason, please contact us directly and we will offer you some additional tips and support. If we cannot together get your cat to happily accepts his new supplement we will fully refund you.
Because no matter how effective maxxiSAMe is, it will not work if the cat is not taking it. Fortunetly, when we have had the opportunity to work with the owners we have in most cases been successful in getting the cats to accept their supplements. Which is exactly what we both want. For your cat to feel better with the help of our products.
Store your maxxiSAMe for cats in a cool, dry place. We recommend refrigerating the container after opening.
The best by date is printed on the side of the container.

maxxiSAMe is available for both cats and dogs. It is exactly the same product; it is just the label and the size of the container and the scoop that are different. The smaller size is maxxiSAMe for cats and contains 90 g (3.2 oz). While the larger size is maxxiSAMe for dogs and contains 150 g (5.3 oz).
However, there is no reason why cat owners can not buy the larger container for their cat, or cats. While owners of small dogs may prefer to buy the cat version for the little friend.
